Part I. THE FOUNDING OF THE SANGHA OF BHIKKHUNIS (The Order of Nuns)

Paragraph 1. It was at the request of Elder Ānanda, the devoted attendant, and Queen Gotamī, that the Buddha founded the Order of nuns. Just as he had granted the rank of the two chief disciples for the Order of monks, he appointed two chief female disciples, Venerable Khemā and Venerable Uppalavannā, for the Order of nuns headed by Venerable Bhikkhunī Gotamī.

Đoạn 1: Chính nhờ lời thỉnh cầu của Tôn giả Ānanda, người thị giả tận tụy và Hoàng hậu Gotamī mà Đức Phật đã thành lập Ni chúng. Cũng như Ngài đã ban phẩm vị cho hai đại đệ tử cho Tăng chúng, Đức Phật đã chọn hai nữ đại đệ tử, là nữ Tôn giả Khemā và nữ Tôn giả Uppalavannā, cho Ni chúng do Tôn giả Tỳ kheo ni Gotamī đứng đầu.

Founding = establishment: sự thiết lập, sự thành lập

found (v): thành lập, sáng lập, (khác với động từ find-found-found)

      Foundation (n): nền tảng, nền móng, cơ sở, tổ chức…

Sangha of Bhikkhuni = The Order of Buddhist nuns: Tăng già Tỳ-kheo Ni, Hội chúng Tỳ-kheo Ni

at the request of s.o. : bởi/theo/nhờ sự thỉnh cầu  

= because of s.o.’s request: vì ước muốn của ai đó

devoted attendant /di’voutid ə’tendənt/: người hầu cận/thị giả tận tâm

            Devotion /di’vouʃn/ (n): sự hết lòng, sự tận tụy, sự hy sinh… hay sự sùng bái

grant (v): ban, tặng. Take sth for granted: cho điều gì là chắc chắn/hiển nhiên

rank (n): thứ bậc, thứ hạng

chief disciple /'tʃi:f/ di`saipl/: đệ tử chính/trưởng (trưởng tử)

two chief female disciples: 2 nữ trưởng tử

appoint (v): chỉ định, đề cử, bổ nhiệm.

appointment (n): sự sắp xếp, sự bổ nhiệm

Venerable /`venərəbl/ (n): đại đức Tăng/Ni

head /hed/(v): dẫn đầu, chỉ huy, lãnh đạo

        head /hed/(n): cái đầu/người đứng đầu. The head of a temple = abbot: trụ trì

Bhikkhuni Gotami: Mahā-prajāpati Gotamī: Ma-ha Ba-xà-ba-đề Kiều-đàm-di

P.2. In the Therigāthā appear several verses uttered by those famous female disciples who attained Sainthood together with other Sakyan ladies.

Part II. CHIEF DISCIPLES AMONG THE FOUR ASSEMBLIES

A) Bhikkhu (monks)

1. “Chief among my disciples, monks of long standing is Añña Kondañña.

2. Chief among those of great wisdom is Sāriputta.

3. Chief among those of psychic powers is Moggallāna the Great.

4. “Chief among those of austerity is Kassapa the Great.

5. “Chief among those of divine vision is Anuruddha.

6. “Chief among those of large following is Uruvela Kassapa.

7. “Chief among those of wide knowledge and good behavior is Ananda.

8. “Chief among those of good health is Bakkula.

9. Chief among my disciples, who know the Rules by heart, is Upāli.

10. Chief among my disciples, who are Dhamma - teachers, is Punna Mantaaniputta.

11. Chief among my disciples, who are admonishers of the monks, is Kappina the Great.

12. Chief among my disciples, who are admonishers of the nuns, is Nandaka.

13. Chief among my disciples, who are anxious for training, is Rāhula.

14. Chief among my disciples, who live in peace and are worthy of offerings, is Subbūti.

15. Chief among my disciples, who guard the sense-doors is Nanda.”

long standing: lâu dài, lâu năm. A monk of long standing = an Elder: trưởng lão
     standing (a): thường trực/hiện hành: standing vice President: Phó chủ tịch thường trực

Moggallāna the Great: Đại Mục-kiền-liên. Alexander the Great: A-lịch-sơn Đại đế

austerity /ɔːˈsteriti/ (n) = austere way of life: khổ hạnh, hạnh đầu đà

divine vision = heavenly eye: thiên nhãn/ nhìn thấy bằng mắt thần

large following: nhiều người ủng hộ/đi theo 

wide knowledge and good behavior: kiến thức rộng và ứng xử tốt

know the Rules by heart: thông suốt Luật

Dhamma - teacher: Pháp sư, người giảng dạy Phật Pháp

admonisher /ədˈmɒniʃər/ (n): người giáo giới

     admonition /ædməˈnɪʃən/ = admonishment (n)/ədˈmɒniʃmənt/: sự khuyên răn

admonish (v): khiển trách, khuyên răn, nhắc nhở…

anxious /´æηʃəs/ (a): lo lắng, sốt sắng    

     anxiety /æɳ'zaiəti/ (n): mối lo lắng, mối bận tâm

worthy of offering: xứng đáng với sự cúng dường

sense-doors = doors of sense = sense-organs: các căn/các cửa giác quan (mắt, tai, mũi, lưỡi, thân, ý) (door = organ = gate = root):  

six sense-organs (6 internal sense bases): eye, ear, nose, tongue, body, mind/consciousness

six sense-objects (6 external sense bases): visual, sound, odor (smell), taste, tough, mental objects
   

B) Bhikkhunīs - Chief Women Disciples (Nuns)

1. “Chief among my women disciples, nuns of long standing, is Great Prajāpati Gotamī.

2. “Chief among my women disciples, nuns of great wisdom, is Khemā.

3. “Chief among my women disciples, nuns of supernatural powers, is Uppalavannā.

4. “Chief among my women disciples, nuns of meditative powers, is Nandā.

5. Chief among my women disciples, nuns of divine vision is Sakulā.

6. Chief among Dhamma - teachers is Dhammadinnā.

7. Chief among those who have attained great supernatural powers is Bhaddhā Kaccānā.

8. Chief among those who are adept in the Rules is Patacārā.

1. Đứng đầu trong các đệ tử của ta, có hạ lạp cao nhất, là Ni trưởng Prajāpati Gotamī.

supernatural power /su:pə´nætʃrəl/: năng lực siêu nhiên = psychic power: thần thông

meditative power: năng lực thiền định

adept (n,a): bậc tinh thông = expert = excellent

C) Upāsakas (Lay - Brothers) - Chief lay - followers

1. Chief among my lay disciples (lay - followers), of alms - givers is Sudatta the householder, Anāthapindika.

2. Chief among Dhamma - teachers, is Citta of Macchikāsanda.

3. Chief among those who win the 4 bases of sympathy is Hatthaka of Ālavī.

4. Chief among those who wait on the Order, is Uggata.

5. Chief among those of unwavering faith is Sura Ambattha.

6. Chief among those are liked by people is Jīvaka the physician.

1. Đứng đầu trong hàng để tử tại gia của ta về bố thí cúng dường là đại thí chú Sudatta (Anāthapindika - Cấp-cô-độc)

2. Đứng đầu trong Pháp sư tại gia là Citta của Macchikāsanda.

3. Đứng đầu trong số những người đạt được 4 Nhiếp pháp là Hatthaka của Ālavī.

4. Đứng đầu trong những người hộ trì Tăng chúng là Ambattha.

5. có lòng tịnh tín bất động là Sura Ambattha.

6. Đứng đầu trong những người được mọi người yêu thích là thầy thuốc Jīvaka.

Layperson = lay follower = laity /`leiti/ (n): người thế tục, cư sĩ tại gia, tín đồ

Lay brother = Layman: cư sĩ nam, thiện nam

Laywomen : cư sĩ nữ, tín nữ

Lay disciple: đệ tử tại gia

(Lưu ý: Ngày nay chỉ sử dụng những từ ‘Buddhists’, ‘male/female Buddhists’, Buddhist followers để nói về các thiện nam tín nữ Phật tử, chứ không dùng ‘Lay’.)

alms-giver: thí chủ, người cúng dường

householder: gia chủ, tín chủ

four bases of sympathy/popularity (Tứ Nhiếp pháp - catvāri-saṃgrahavastūni): 4 cơ sở của sự thiện cảm/đồng cảm
    - Bố thí (Dāna): Charity = giving = generosity = liberalit

    - Ái ngữ (Priyavāditā): Kind speech = kindly talk = kind words = affectionate/pleasant speech

    - Lợi hành (Arthacaryā): doing good conduct = Good/useful/beneficial action/deed

    - Đồng sự (Samānārthatā): treating all alike (equanimity) = sharing a common aim = cooperation.  

wait on: hầu cận, hầu hạ, phục dịch 

unwavering faith: niềm tin vững chắc, không lay chuyển

     wavering (a,v): dao động, lay động, lay chuyển

     wave /weiv/(n): sóng; waves: sóng nước, sóng biển. wave (v): gợn sóng, đung đưa, vẫy (tay) 

physician /fi`zi ʃn/ (n) = medical doctor: thầy thuốc/bác sĩ

D) Upāsikās (Lay Sisters)-Chief lay followers.(women).

1. “Chief among my women disciples, of those who first took refuge in my teaching is Sujātā.

2. Chief among who wait on the Order is Visākhā, Migāra’s mother.

3. Chief among those who live in kindliness is Sāmāvati.

4. Chief among those of wide knowledge is Khujjuttarā.

5. Chief among those of meditative power is Uttarā.

6. Chief among those of unwavering faith is Kātiyāni.

        (Anguttara Nikāya I, the book of the ones).

D) Nữ cư sĩ đứng đầu (cận sự nữ)

1. Đứng đầu trong các nữ đệ tử tại gia của ta là người đầu tiên quy y theo giáo pháp của ta là Sujātā.

2. hầu cận Tăng chúng là Visākhā, mẹ của Migāra (Lộc Mẫu).

3. tại gia sống từ tâm là Sāmāvati.

4. đa văn là Khujjuttarā.

5. thiền định là Uttarā.

6. tịnh tín bất động là Kātiyāni.

Take refuge in: quy y

Kindliness = loving kindness = compassion: tâm từ/lòng từ

Wide knowledge: đa văn, trí biết rộng

Therigāthā:

The Thirty - three gods.

And gods in other Heavens,

All they come forever under Māra’s Control.

For all are bound by bonds of sense-desire.

On fire is all the world, and racked in flames,

Ablaze is all the world, the Heavens do quake.

But that which quakes not,

Untrodden by the worldling’s feet,

Where Mara comes not, nor has waygate,

There does my heart abide in blessed retreat.

Come under: chịu, rơi vào

Bond = fetter: trói buộc, kiết phược, triền phước, kiết sử

     bind-bound-bound (v): trói, cột, đóng…

Sense-desire: dục, tham dục, ham muốn về cảm giác (giác quan)

on fire: lửa đang cháy. ablaze /ə`bleiz/(a): rực cháy

quake = shake (n,v): rung chuyển

rack = to ruin: tàn lụi

untrodden: hoang, chưa ai tới, chưa có dấu chân

worldling (n): người/kẻ phàm tục

       worldly (a): tục, trần tục. worldly life: ở đời, đời sống thế tục

blessed retreat: chỗ yên tỉnh an lạc

abide (v): trú, ở. An abode (n): nơi cư trú

Trưởng lão Ni kệ:

Chư thiên ở cõi trời Ba mươi ba.

Và chư thiên trong nhiều cõi trời khác,

Chúng đều mãi chịu sự cai quản của Ác ma.

Vì tất cả bị tham dục trói buộc.

Lửa cháy khắp thế gian, và bị lửa đốt tiêu vong

Rực cháy toàn thế gian, các cõi trời rung chuyển.

Song nơi nào không động,

Không dấu chân phàm trần

Nơi Ma vương không đến, không có ngỏ đưa đường

Nơi đó tâm ta trú, trong tịch tịnh an lạc.
